Direct Question Definition and Examples in English
Direct Question Definition and Examples in English A sentence that asks a question and ends with a question mark, such as Who are you? and Why are you here? Contrast with indirect question. A direct question, says Thomas S. Kane, is always marked by one or some combination of three signals: a rising intonation of the voice, an auxiliary verb inverted to a position before the subject, or an interrogative pronoun or adverb (who, what, why, when, how, and so on) (The New Oxford Guide to Writing, 1988). Examples and Observations Then our mother came inAnd she said to us two,Did you have any fun?Tell me. What did you do?(Dr. Seuss, The Cat in the Hat. Random House, 1957)Wheres Papa going with that ax? said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.(E.B. White, Charlottes Web. Harper, 1952)Whats in the box?(Brad Pitt as Detective David Mills in Seven, 1995)Whos on first?(Lou Costello addressing Bud Abbot in a famous comedy routine)Open your eyes, and look within. Are you satisfied with the life youre living?(Bob Marley, Exodus. Wodehouse, Laughing Gas, 1936)When I was crossing the border into Canada, they asked if I had any firearms with me. I said, Well, what do you need?(Comedian Steven Wright)Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?(Lewis Carroll,Alices Adventures in Wonderland, 1865)Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?(Edward G. Robinson as C aesar Enrico Bandello in Little Caesar, 1931) Are you a good witch or a bad witch?(Billie Burke as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, addressing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, 1939)What you doing sitting here by yourself, Marguerite? She didnt accuse, she asked for information. I said that I was watching the sky.(Maya Angelou, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Random House, 1969) Three Main Types of Direct Questions Questions are sentences which seek information. They fall into three main types, depending on the kind of reply they expect, and on how they are constructed. Sentences formed in these ways are said to have an interrogative structure.ââ¬â¹CautionA questioning tone of voice can turn a statement into a yes-no question. Such questions have the structure of a declarative sentence. The tone of voice has become particularly common, especially among young people, in recent decades. Marys outside?Youve spoken to her? (David Crystal, Rediscover Grammar. Pearson, 2003)à Yes-no questions allow an affirmative or negative reply, often just yes or no. The subject follows a verb (the auxiliary). Will Michael resign? Are they ready?Wh- questions allow a reply from a wide range of possibilities. They begin with a question word, such as what, why, where, or how. Where are you going? Why didnt he answer?Alternative questions require a reply which relates to the options given in the sentence. They always contain the connecting word or. Will you travel by train or by boat? The Lighter Side of Direct Questions I think of the story of a woman who was making a cross-country trip on a train. Something went wrong with the cars heating system and before long the passenger was suffering desperately from extreme cold in her upper berth. Finally, maddened with discomfort, she leaned over and spoke to the male passenger who was occupying the lower berth.Excuse me, she said, but are you as cold as I am?Im colder, he said, somethings wrong with this damn train.Well, the woman said, would you mind getting me an extra blanket?Suddenly the man got an odd look in his eye and said, You know, since were both miserably cold, let me ask you a direct question. Would you like to pretend that were married?Well, actually, the woman said, yes, I would.Good, the fellow said, then get up and get it yourself.(Steve Allen, Steve Allens Private Joke File. Three Rivers Press, 2000) Also Known As: interrogative sentence

International finance Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
International finance - Case Study Example hy debt to equity ratio for a business should be such that the equity is high than the debt, since it is only then, that a business can demonstrate its ability to pay its debts using its own resources, without borrowing externally (Tyran, 1986:38). However, the debt to equity ratio of NDP points to the fact that the companyââ¬â¢s financial status is not healthy, since the company had a debt to equity ratio of 100% (Moffet & Adelson, 2011:44). This means that the companyââ¬â¢s debt is equal to the companyââ¬â¢s owned resources and as such, should the financial crisis extend for long, the company cannot remain with any resources to continue its operations, since it would use all of its resources to pay up debts. The other pointer to the unhealthy financial status of the NDP is the high interest expense which the company is incurring. The increase in the debt levels of the company has a corresponding increase on the cost of capital, in form of the interest charges (Moffet & Adelson, 2011:44). Thus, considering that the interest expenses for NDP are consistently increasing, with the company having an interest expense of HK$102 by December 2008, but the same increasing to HK$480 in millions by march 2009 (Moffet & Adelson, 2011:43). This simply means that the company is obtaining its capital at very high costs, which are then unhealthy for the operation of the company. The other issue that indicates that the financial status f NDP is not healthy is its earnings ratio. The earnings ratio measures the rate at which the business is able to generate revenues, after it has paid costs of generating the revenues, such as interests, taxes and depreciation of the assets applied towards generating the revenues (McClure, 2011:n.p). For example the earnings of the NDP by September 2008, was HK$ 3,988 million, but the same had reduced to HK$ 2,049 million by March 2009, indicating that the revenues for the company were consistently reducing (Moffet & Adelson, 2011:43). This is a pointer

Reluctant Collectivists Essay Example for Free
Reluctant Collectivists Essay The events of the 20th century, especially of its first part had brought a lot of things to think over in political and economical sphere. The global economical crisis of the 1930ies and the War time had proved there have to be changes made in the regulation of the political and social relationships as well as in the government policy. Time showed that for consistent and stable development of the country there as to special welfare social programs that would defend all classes of the society. à Reluctant collectivists proposed that there has to be state intervention in the countryââ¬â¢s economy that would execute the role of mechanism for making good the failure of the market to control avoidable ills, but they didnââ¬â¢t have a purpose of using it as the only instrument for economical change. à Two of the most known reluctant collectivists Keynes and Beveridge are known to be the founders of the British Welfare sate. They strongly believed in the concept of free market relations, and the minimization of the state intervention by their opinion would maximize the efficiency of economics, political and social freedoms. à à à But still reluctant collectivists argued that for a wide variety of political and economical reasons the market in the free society was not working on the ideal level as it was noted by economic theorists. The economical problems and social issues that Great Britain faced during and after WW2 motivated the need of state regulation, as they proposed. By their opinion the economical waste and instability may discredit parliamentary democracy and gave the birth to mistrust to the government. à Even though that reluctant collectivists were in favor of state regulations and intervention of state to the market and economics of the country in the serious period of economical situation, they still didnââ¬â¢t fully support social insurance system. By their opinion the organization of social security is not the stateââ¬â¢s problem, the assistance schemes of the government according to reluctant collectivists should simply include the guarantee of living income for each citizen. And thatââ¬â¢s why the living standards above the minimum wage have to be gained by individuals themselves. à The philosophical premises of the reluctant collectivism are originated in the theories of free market, which is considered to be the best mechanism that insures initiative of the individual and hence political freedom.à But here comes the question: if there has to be a need in state regulation of market and economical relations how much of the intervention is needed for that. The obvious answer is the following: the weakness and the strengths of the market have to be analyzed first. This pragmatism puts reluctant collectivists close to the conservatives, whose philosophy accepts the preserving of the best that remains from the past, while adopting new things that are most likely to change the situation for better. à Justification of their political aims and program by reluctant collectivists during the period of serious economical issues in the UK helped Conservatives to come to power in 1950ies and 1960ies. But still the theory of ââ¬Å"reluctant collectivismâ⬠that seems to rapidly react on the changes in stateââ¬â¢s market and economy can not fully answer the question what is good for the further development of market that doesnââ¬â¢t face problems. As the result the existing problems in understanding of the market development program caused the contradictions in the views of conservatives and those who belonged to reluctant collectivists. The understanding of the market virtues by reluctant collectivists didnââ¬â¢t give the chance for introducing and practicing economical and market reforms. As a result most of their programs lost their actuality in 1960ies. Reference George. V. Wilding, P(1985). The Reluctant collectivists. In ideology and social welfare(pp.44-68). New York: Routledge.

Views of Modern man :: essays research papers
The Views of Modern Man à à à à à The various short stories of the age of analysis and anxiety do not depict man in a heroic guise, nor do they reflect any deep abiding faith in his destiny. This is especially true in the short stories ââ¬Å"Gooseberriesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"The Jewelsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"The Rocking Horse Winnerâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"The Devil and Daniel Websterâ⬠In each, theme is used to give a dim view of the future of mankind, and common themes help tie together a picture of what the authors of this age saw as a plague on mankind. à à à à à In ââ¬Å"Gooseberriesâ⬠Chekhov conveys through the actions of his characters the theme that success comes at a price, and that the ends donââ¬â¢t always justify the means. In the story Nikolay dreams of having a farm and an estate of his own. Throughout his entire life he scrimped and saved every penny he could find. He married a widower for her money and starved her to death, all the while not realizing that it was through his actions that she died. Nikolay did eventually obtain his estate, but at what price? He had been so blinded by his hunger for money that he did not realize that his wife died because he refused to feed her properly? ââ¬Å"And, of course, it never for a moment occurred to my brother that he was to blame for her death. Money, like vodka can do queer things to a man.â⬠In this quote Chekhov is showing the reader what powerful effect money has on a man. The pursuit of material wealth becomes all-important to a man, and anything e lse can be shrugged off. Chekhov is conveying yet another theme through this quote, that of materialism. He feels that when a man becomes obsessed with money his mind becomes shaded, his vision impaired. It is interesting that he compared money to vodka, as though man becomes impaired against all other ideas but those of increasing his wealth. Chekhov sees money and the pursuit of material gain as an all-important goal in the society that surrounds him. He shows what can happen when someone becomes so obsessed with money that they become blinded to the world around them. Chekhov does this through Nikolay. Sure Nikolay does finally get the estate, but it is not quite the one he dreamed of. There is no orchard or duck pond, just a stream with coffee coloured water that had been tainted by a nearby glue factory.

How Would you physicalise a charcter from a play Essay
Too physicalise a character from a play you need to have studied the specific character in a reasonable amount of detail, so you can portray them correctly. To do this effectively you need to do various exercises, all which will help you grasp the character the best you can. There are several methods which can help you to understand a character eg: Hot Seating, Spider Diagrams, and Workshops etc. In our lesson we explored the character by Hot Seating, Character Profiles and other exercises. Hot seating is an extremely effective method, as it puts you on the spot answering various questions in your characters persona. It helps lock in the information about the character youââ¬â¢re playing. You need to understand the questions being asked from your characters point of view so you can understand who your character is and why. We used this method in our lesson, and i found it was an effective way of physicalising a character. Another exercise we did in class which was effective was one where we were told to hold a pose in the form of our character then walk around the room in the characters style. This is a great exercise because although Hot Seating, Profiles are good they focus mainly on the psychological side, where as this focused on the physical aspect of the character. Character Profiles I believe are an essential tool in bringing a character to life. Because it allows you to go deep in to the information about the character, their background, family life, nationality etc. These aspects are what form how a character behaves and why they feel certain things. For example Stanley in Street Car Desire, has a particular hatred for being called a ââ¬Ëpolakââ¬â¢ as his family originates from Poland and deems the phrase derogatory towards them. Spider Diagrams are effective in showing your characters relations with other characters in the play. These are essential to know as it may influence why the act a certain way around someone. How did you explore the use of Verbal and Non=Verbal.

The Mississippi Burning: Could the FBI have done more?
Depicted in a 1988 movie and subject of many journals, references, and publications, the Mississippi Burning, otherwise known as the United States vs. Cecil price et. al. case, has been one of the most famous trials in the country. Mississippi Burning revolves around the murder of three civil rights activists in Mississippi, 1964. The victims were Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andy Goodman. The three were in Mississippi to visit the bombed Mt. Zion church, one among the series of twenty black churches bombed on Summer, 1964. In this visit, June 21 of that year, the three were arrested and illegally detained by Deputy Sheriff Cecil Price. It was also Price who turned the three over to the Ku Klux Klan, in a scripted ââ¬Å"releaseâ⬠for the three with the KKK. The bodies of the three, beaten and shot, were found in a dam almost two months after on August 4. (Mississippi Burning Trial: A Chronology, n.d.) The Ku Klux Klan Racists, terrorists, anti-Semitistsââ¬âthe Ku Klux Klan (KKK) have been called many names from their conception in the 1800s. The Klan started out as a group promoting white supremacy. From their beginnings, they have used terrorism, intimidation, and cross burning against African Americans. While they were successfully suppressed, the KKK has found itself reincarnated by modern followers in the 1920s. This second KKK was also suppressed, but was revived when the Civil Rights Movement was activated in the 1960s. The 60s found the Ku Klux Klan of Mississippi associated with crimes against the civil rights activists, most especially in favor of the Black people. The Ku Klux Klan were found guilty, in federal records, for the assassination of Medgar Evers in 1963, as well as in the well-known trial against Cecil Price for the KKK murder of Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman. The series of bombings of black churches were also accounted to the members of the KKK. Cross burnings throughout this period was also rampant. (Mississippi Burning Trial: A Chronology, n.d.) According to The Ku Klux Klan (n.d.), the most prominent KKK movement in the 60s was the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, founded by Robert Shelton, who was reported to have heavily employed lynching (mob killing) to discourage black people from voting, in contrary to the Mississippi Summer Project encouraging blacks to vote. Schools, homes and white people supporting the movement have also been victimized by the KKKââ¬â¢s lynching and other forms of intimidation. This acts of intimidation, murder, assassination, manslaughter, and were not ââ¬Å"inventedâ⬠by the 1960ââ¬â¢s KKK of Mississippi. Rather, they are renditions of the original KKKââ¬â¢s acts in the 1800s. The FBI and the 1960ââ¬â¢s Racist Violence Behind the successes and failures of the racial discrimination cases in the 1960s, most especially in the South, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) plays a big role. The same case goes in a much publicized case as that of the Mississippi Burning, which interrelates several different racism cases of burning, murder, and civil rights infringements in Mississippi into one highly sensationalized court proceeding. The FBI, though, uses no special means in investigating racist violence at the time. In fact, FBI has had secrets of its own. Glick (n.d.) asserts that the FBI has its way of infiltrating movements in the 1960s, including black movements. In his text, Glick suggests that the FBI has COINTELPRO or counter intelligence program which uses otherwise illegal means of investigation such as infiltration, deception, and harassment to dissolve movements. The main targets were said to be Black movements. Thus, police racism has been existent. There is no known concrete relation between the COINTELPRO and the Mississippi Burning case, however. Could the FBI have done more? 1960s was a period without the present technology that FBI enjoys. FBI investigators had standard procedures to follow, and there is no concrete evidence that they infringed any of these procedures. The Mississippi Burning case was one that has been trialed by the public before the court. Everybody knew who were guilty. Everybody believed Cecil Price and the KKK were to be convicted. That, then the evidences and witnesses affirmed. Thus, the FBI was sufficient and efficient in this respect. However, there are many other cases racism violence and civil rights violation, most of which were not publicized. The FBI has been passive in dealing with these cases. Police racism existed, and if it were true the COINTELPRO worsened the events. The FBI could have devised a special plan to implement anti-racism violence statutes to support the Civil Rights Movement that was active at that time, as it was no ordinary time. Then, it will be known that the FBI has done enough. References Glick, B. (n.d.) COINTELPRO revisited: spying and disruption. Breaking Bad Blue Crystal Meth Rock Candy Recipe
Breaking Bad Blue Crystal Meth Rock Candy Recipe Have you ever wondered what AMC used for crystal meth in Breaking Bad? Walts famous blue crystal meth is rock candy, not drugs! Here is a recipe to make your own blue crystal candy, perfect for a Breaking Bad party or snacks while watching the show. Of course, you can make the candy any color, flavor it, or even make it glow under a black light. Blue Crystal Ingredients You only need a few common cooking ingredients for this project: 3-3/4 cups sugar1-1/4 cups light corn syrup1 cup waterblue food coloring (or whatever color you like)1/2 to 1 teaspoon flavoring, such as vanilla, lemon, or cherry flavoring What To Do If you have a candy thermometer, be sure to use it. Otherwise, watch carefully for any darkening or browning of the sugar, which indicates youre getting the mixture too hot. Grease a cookie sheet. You can use butter, shortening, or non-stick spray.Stir the sugar, corn syrup, and water together in a pan over medium heat.Bring the mixture to a boil and continue boiling for 3 minutes.Stir in food coloring and flavoring, if desired. This is the part where the candy thermometer comes in handy. Increase the temperature to 300 Ã °F. The goal is to melt the sugar and harden the candy, but not carmelize (brown) it. Once the mixture reaches the temperature, remove the pan from heat.Pour the hot mixture onto the greased cookie sheet. Be very careful! The candy is extremely hot and sticky at this point.Allow the crystals to cool completely. Use a mallet or hammer to break the crystals into pieces.Store your blue crystals in an airtight container, since humidity will make them sticky. To keep the crystals from sticking to each other, you can spritz them with nonstick cooking spray or dust them with powdered sugar. Glowing Blue Crystals If you want blue crystals that glow blue under a black light, replace the water in the recipe with tonic water. The quinine that produces the blue glow has a distinctive flavor, which you may like or may wish to mask with another flavoring. Orbital Definition and Example
Orbital Definition and Example Orbital Definition In chemistry and quantum mechanics, an orbital is a mathematical function that describes the wave-like behavior of an electron, electron pair, or (less commonly) nucleons. An orbital may also be called an atomic orbital or electron orbital. Although most people think of an orbit regarding a circle, the probability density regions that may contain an electron may be spherical, dumbbell-shaped, or more complicated three-dimensional forms. The purpose of the mathematical function is to map the probability of the location of an electron in a region around (or theoretically inside) an atomic nucleus. An orbital may refer to anà ââ¬â¹electron cloud having an energy state described by given values of the n, âââ, and mâââ quantum numbers. Every electron is described by a unique set of quantum numbers. An orbital can contain two electrons with paired spins and is often associated with a specific region of an atom. The s orbital, p orbital, d orbital, and f orbital refer to orbitals that have an angular momentum quantum numberà âââà 0, 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The letters s, p, d, and f come from the descriptions of alkali metal spectroscopy lines as appearing sharp, principal, diffuse, or fundamental. After s, p, d, and f, orbital names beyondà âââà à 3 are alphabetical (g, h, i, k, ...). The letter j is omitted because it isnt different from i in all languages. Orbital Examples The 1s2 orbital contains two electrons. It is the lowest energy level (n 1), with an angular momentum quantum number âââ 0. The electrons in the 2px orbital of an atom are generally found within a dumbbell-shaped cloud about the x-axis. Properties of Electrons in Orbitals Electrons display wave-particle duality, which means they exhibit some properties of particles and some characteristics of waves. Particleà Properties Electrons have particle-like properties. For example, a single electron has a -1 electrical charge. There are an integer number of electrons around an atomic nucleus.Electrons move between orbitals like particles. For example, if a photon of light is absorbed by an atom, only a single electron changes energy levels. Wave Properties At the same time, electrons behave like waves. Although its common to think of electrons as individual solid particles, in many ways they are more like a photon of light. Its not possible to pinpoint the location of an electron, only describe the probability of finding one within a region described by a wave function.Electrons dont orbit the nucleus like Earth orbits the Sun. The orbit is a standing wave, with the energy levels like harmonics on vibrating string. An electrons lowest energy level is like the fundamental frequency of a vibrating string, while higher energy levels are like harmonics. The region that might contain an electron is more like a cloud or atmosphere, except a spherical probability only applies when an atom only has a single electron! Orbitals and the Atomic Nucleus Although discussions about orbitals almost always refer to electrons, there are also energy levels and orbitals in the nucleus. The different orbitals give rise to nuclear isomers and metastable states.

Strategic Analysis and Selection of Information Systems Essay
Strategic Analysis and Selection of Information Systems - Essay Example For the purpose of this assignment, two articles will be reviewed for inclusion into the essay. The first is Collaborative Computing and True Enterprise Architecture is Still Two Years Away, by Worthen and the second is B2B: Execution of the Concept is Key to Success by M. Sawhney. The purpose of this assignment is to explain the relationship between business strategy in IT strategy, determine any problems that occurred with strategy formulation, determine if there were problems with strategy implementation, and determine if there were problems with the strategic process. In order to fully understand the concepts presented in this assignment, it is first essential to know the definition of the words that will be discussed herein. Strategy can be defined as "a long term plan of action designed to achieve a particular goal, most often "winning". Strategy is differentiated from tactics or immediate actions with resources at hand by its nature of being extensively premeditated, and often practically rehearsed. Strategies are used to make the problem or problems easier to understand and solve" (Wikipedia, 2008). Strategy formulation then can be defined as "the process of determining appropriate courses of action for achieving organizational objectives and thereby accomplishing organizational purpose" (Kotelnikov, 2008). Strategic processes are made up of macro processes within an organization. "All organizational work is part of one or more processes. At their very broadest, macro processes can span an entire organization and cut across all major function s or departments. Examples of macro processes include the design and development of new products/services; producing products or delivering services; product order or service request fulfillment; invoicing/accounting, and collecting money; inventory management and logistics; information management; admitting, discharging, and transferring patients; or generating leads and making sales" (Clemmer 2008). Article 1 B2B: Execution of the Concept is Key to Success, by Mohanbir Sawhney Problems with Strategy Formulation When forming their strategy, "Their logic seemed elegant: create marketplaces that would match buyers and sellers, bringing improved liquidity, efficiency and transparency to B2B transactions, and make money through transaction fees from the trades, Once the buyers and sellers were on board to conduct transactions, the exchanges could augment that core functionality with value-added services such as logistics management, credit and settlement, and supplier verification" (Sawhney, 2002, p. 1). Yet, the B2B boom that was supposed to happen did not. This happened when investors started to question the business model upon with the new B2B concept was based. In other words, it was not the strategy formulation that was the problem; it was the strategy implementation. Problems with Strategy Implementation The article says itself, "One might conclude from the evidence that the idea of a B2B exchange is fundamentally flawed. However, it's not the concept of the exchange that is flawed but the execution of that concept" (Sawhney, 2002, p. 1). The article cites the chicken-and-the-egg concept as the reason for the failure of the B2B concept; i.e. it is hard to get buyers without suppliers and it is hard to get
